About TPC Sawgrass — Players Stadium Course
TPC Sawgrass is the most strategically demanding course in Florida - Pete Dye's 1980 masterwork that serves as the permanent home of THE PLAYERS Championship, the unofficial fifth major on the PGA Tour. The island-green 17th (a par 3 of 132 yards surrounded entirely by water) is the most photographed hole in professional golf and has produced the most dramatic Sunday finishes in Tour history. At 7,215 yards of heroic Dye strategy, the Stadium Course tests every shot shape in the bag. Open to resort guests and outside visitors year-round.
History
TPC Sawgrass — Players Stadium Course — History
The Players Stadium Course opened in 1980 as the first purpose-built stadium course, designed by Pete Dye with Alice Dye, who is credited with the island-green concept at the 17th. It has hosted THE PLAYERS Championship, the PGA Tour's flagship event, since 1982 and anchors the Tour's headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach.
Design
TPC Sawgrass — Players Stadium Course — Design
The first stadium course ever built, and the reason the phrase exists. Commissioner Deane Beman asked Pete Dye for a course that favoured no particular player or style, and that could be watched -- so Dye and Alice Dye shaped the ground into spectator viewing as an explicit design input rather than an afterthought. No two consecutive holes run in the same direction, which keeps the wind constantly changing. Scottish-style bunkering, sandy waste areas and water on every hole, threaded through oak, pine and palm. The par-3 17th and its island green is the most recognised hole in golf.
