About Ponte Vedra Inn & Club — Ocean Course
The Ocean Course at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club is one of the oldest and most historically significant golf courses in Florida - a layout credited with pioneering the island green concept that Pete Dye would famously reimagine at TPC Sawgrass decades later. Dating to 1928, the course has been refined through multiple renovations while preserving its coastal character and historic identity. Resort guests and Inn members can access the course; a limited number of outside tee times may be available.
History
Ponte Vedra Inn & Club — Ocean Course — History
The Ocean Course opened in 1928 at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, originally designed by Herbert Bertram Strong and refined through many later renovations. A longtime private and resort mainstay on the northeast Florida coast, it is often cited for an early island-green par 3 that predates more famous examples.
Design
Ponte Vedra Inn & Club — Ocean Course — Design
Built in 1928 without construction equipment: roughly a hundred mules dredged the lagoons and pushed up the mounding that still gives the course its movement. That method is why it rolls the way it does. It is wide open with small greens, several of them elevated and demanding a committed approach, and the ocean breeze makes club selection a real decision. Its ninth hole is credited as the first island green ever built. Herbert Strong laid it out; Robert Trent Jones Sr. and later Bobby Weed have both revised it.
