About Streamsong Resort — Black Course
The Black Course is Streamsong's newest and boldest chapter - Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner's 2017 design delivers vast, sculpted green complexes and a links sensibility that completes the three-architect narrative of the resort's campus. Where the Red plays fast and firm and the Blue plays native and contemplative, the Black plays dramatic and demanding, with green sizes and shapes unlike anything at the other two courses. Three architects, three radically different experiences at one Polk County address.
History
Streamsong Resort — Black Course — History
The Black Course opened in 2017 as Streamsong's third 18, designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner on open prairie set apart from the resort's original dunes. Its scale and severe putting surfaces round out a three-course collection widely regarded as one of the best public golf destinations in America.
Design
Streamsong Resort — Black Course — Design
The third and largest-scaled course at Streamsong, built by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner in 2017 on the resort's former phosphate-mining ground. Hanse used the spoil terrain rather than flattening it, so the course rolls and tumbles at a scale that reads as un-Floridian. The green complexes carry the design: the 9th is a punchbowl played blind off a windmill aiming point into a funnelled green, and the 17th falls away from a giant oak. Par 73 over 7,320 yards.
